Responsibility for active runway surfaces

Tower Controllers ensure the runway is clear for take-off and landing. To accomplish this, they are normally given 5 to 7 nautical miles of airspace around the airport that allows them to give the clearances necessary for airport safety. Within the tower, a highly disciplined communications process between the controller, pilots and vehicles on the manoeuvring area is an absolute necessity
